About Sydney

Sydney Schaefer is a Philadelphia based photographer, photographing people, the world and her life. She fell in love with photography more than five years ago the old school way—35mm film.

She's a recent graduate of Temple University's Klein College of Media and Communication in Philadelphia, where she received a bachelors degree in journalism. Sydney held the position of Photo Editor at The Temple News, Temple's award-winning, student-run newspaper during her fifth year at Temple while also working as a freelance reporter and photographer at various Philadelphia media outlets.

During the spring 2018 semester, she was one of two staff photographer interns at the Philadelphia Media Network, the parent company of The Philadelphia Inquirer, Philadelphia Daily News and

She also worked as the visuals editor for a solutions journalism-based course at Temple called Covering Addiction during the spring 2018 semester. Throughout the semester, she visually directed 10 longform solutions-based pieces about addiction, including her own, which was published as a cohesive project in May 2018. The project was recognized for its excellence by Philadelphia Inquirer metro columnist Mike Newall. 

Sydney has had her work published by a range of print and online publications including NPR, The Philadelphia Inquirer, Philadelphia Daily News,, The Fader, WXPN, Billy Penn, The Temple News and many more.

Sydney is a member of the National Press Photographers Association. She received an honorable mention in the sports photo category at the 2018 Student Keystone Press Awards and was awarded the Marnie Levengood Excellence in Sports Photography Award at Klein College's 2018 Department of Journalism awards.
