Sydney Schaefer is a northern New York transplant by way of Philadelphia. About six years ago, she began her journey as a photographer. Starting out, she was a music photographer, but slowly transitioned to photojournalism, where her passion for visual storytelling was best amplified.
Currently, she is working as a staff photographer at the Watertown Daily Times in Watertown, New York, where she documents the north country community.
She's a graduate of Temple University's Klein College of Media and Communication in Philadelphia, where she received a Bachelor's degree in journalism. During her time at Temple, Sydney held the position of photo editor at The Temple News, Temple's award-winning, student-run newspaper and worked as a photo intern at both Billy Penn and the Philadelphia Media Network, the parent company of the Philadelphia Inquirer, Philadelphia Daily News and philly.com.
During the spring 2018 semester, Sydney worked as the visuals editor for a solutions journalism-based course at Temple called Covering Addiction. Throughout the semester, she visually directed ten longform solutions-based pieces about addiction, including her own, which was published as one cohesive project in May 2018. The project was recognized for its excellence by Philadelphia Inquirer metro columnist Mike Newall.
Sydney has been a proud member of the National Press Photographers Association since 2018.
